Taking young children to western Georgia's canyons and caves requires some preparation. A standard guided tour from Kutaisi takes 6 to 8 hours. Knowing the physical requirements ensures a smooth trip for the whole family.

Are kids allowed on the Martvili Canyon boat?

Children must be over 100 cm (1 meter) tall to ride the rowboats.

This rule is strictly enforced at the ticket check. Life jackets are mandatory and provided on-site. The boat ride covers the lower canyon and takes 15 to 20 minutes on the Abasha River.

What to wear inside Prometheus Cave?

Pack a light waterproof jacket for everyone, as the cave remains at 14°C (57°F).

The temperature stays cool all year, even during peak summer. Dress children in layers. Paths inside the cave and around the canyon can be wet, so shoes with good grip are necessary.

How much walking is required?

Expect to walk about 2.1 kilometers total across both sites.

Prometheus Cave features a 1.4-kilometer illuminated trail passing through six public halls. Martvili Canyon has a 700-meter paved circular trail. Tours inside the cave move at a specific pace with a guide, so young children need to keep up.

Are there specific rules for children in the cave?

Kids must stay on the marked paths with the guide.

Touching the stalactites or stalagmites is strictly prohibited. Keep a close eye on young children, as the cave uses low-level lighting to preserve the formations.

Can kids take the Prometheus Cave boat?

Yes, the underground boat ride on the Kumi River is open to families.

This optional ride covers 380 meters and takes about 15 minutes. It runs toward the cave exit. Like the canyon boats, this ride is subject to weather and closes during high water levels.

How do you manage tour pacing for families?

A typical guided day trip from Kutaisi covering both sights takes between 6 and 8 hours.

If you prefer flexible pacing, consider renting a car or hiring a private driver for 100 to 150 GEL. This allows you to stop for breaks and local snacks, which helps when traveling with young children.
